Getting Here

Bali Baru Hideaway is located in the south central Pacific zone. We are about 3.5-4 hours by car from the San Jose (SJO) airport.  A flight arrival into to SJO before 1:30pm should get you here in time for dinner (and maybe sunset if taking a private transfer).

Sunset in Costa Rica is 5:30pm and is dark by 6:00 pm all year round so please factor this into your travel if you are renting a car and driving on your own. It normally takes about an hour to clear customs at SJO and pick up your bags. The rental cars are off-site so it takes another half hour or so.

A flight that arrives at SJO by 1:30 pm plus the drive should get you here about 6:30-7 pm without any stops.  For flights arriving after 2pm, you might consider a 1 night hotel stay in either San Jose, Jaco, or Manuel Antonio.

By Car to Bali Baru Hideaway

There are 3 tolls on this route approximately $6 (please make sure to have $1 bills or have Colones already exchanged).

  • From Juan Santamaria International Airport take CR1 (the main highway) to San Jose.

  • Follow this road to the end and turn toward Escazu.

  • You are now on toll road 27 (keep your eyes open for the Crocodile Bridge to stop and stretch your legs, grab a drink, check out the crocs below either side of the bridge).

  • Take the Jaco Exit to find yourself on Route 34 Costanera (Coastal Highway)

  • Turn left onto the highway to San Isidro del General. The intersection is right at the police check point near Dominical.  In about 3-4 minutes, keep an eye out for the 1 car bridge crossing

  • Drive about 14 km up the hill through Platanillio and you will come to Tinemastes where there is a big white church on the right. Continue down the steep hill where you will see the green general store “Super (Alabast.)/Soda Elizabeth” on your left.  This is the closest mini super-market to stop and load up on water, drinks, snacks, or groceries just for the night or any other days on your trip.

  • Leaving Elizabeth's - Continue up the hill past two saw mills on your right. You will come to a sharp curve and on your left there is a large sign with a Tapir (we are in the Biological Corridor of the Tapir). This is a bit of a dangerous intersection, especially if you are climbing the hill and other traffic is descending. If you have any doubts, it is easier to continue about 500 meters further up the hill to Restaurante Mirador Los Chorros, on your left, which overlooks the valley into which you will be traveling... you can turn around and come back to the entrance from there.

  • We are only 5 minutes on the un-paved road from here.  We will provide you these directions about 3 days before your arrival.  A 4x4 is recommended, but not necessarily a MUST unless it is rainy causing traction issues.

  • Waze is the most frequently used navigation app and works very well throughout Costa Rica.
